The Remarkable Waqia of Prophet Dawood (peace be upon him) (Malfoozat of Shaykh al-Islam Hazrat Maulana Mufti Muhammad Taqi Usmani)
It is narrated that one Day Prophet Dawood (peace be upon him) said to Allah Almighty, “O Allah! You have commanded us to be grateful, and we should indeed express our gratitude to You. But how can we truly offer thanks for Your blessings?
When we offer gratitude, it is only through Your grace that we are able to do so. If we express it with our tongue, even the ability to speak comes from You. Therefore, even thanking You is a blessing in itself, and for that blessing, we must also offer thanks. But then, that too becomes another blessing, requiring further gratitude. This becomes an unending cycle, so how can we ever fully express our thanks? Gratitude itself is one of Your blessings, so how can we do justice to this gratitude?”
Allah Almighty responded by saying, “Today, you have fulfilled the right of gratitude. As much as a servant can offer thanks, you have done so by acknowledging your inability and expressing your humility before Me. By admitting that you cannot fully thank Me, you have offered true gratitude today.”
Thus, the key is attentiveness and focus. It is about emerging from heedlessness. When Allah grants this awareness, one starts to pay attention to the blessings one enjoys. Every little thing starts to be noticed and appreciated.
