Ramadan as a Month of Spiritual Training: Mufti Taqi Usmani’s Advice on Sustaining Taqwa (Malfoozat of Shaykh al-Islam Hazrat Maulana Mufti Muhammad Taqi Usmani)
It was advised that through the blessing of Ramadan, Allah has granted us a period of spiritual training so that a spark of Taqwa (God-consciousness) may be kindled within us. The purpose of fasting is also to develop Taqwa. No matter how weak a Muslim’s faith (Imaan) may be, Alhamdulillah, Ramadan brings a sense of awareness that motivates them to fast, perform Taraweeh, avoid sins, increase their recitation of the Quran, and engage more in the remembrance of Allah (Zikrullah). If they encounter any issues, they feel a slight unease, worrying about whether it might affect their fast. For instance, many people ask if vomiting affects their fast. if it happens unintentionally, the fast remains intact, but if induced, the fast breaks.
In Ramadan, every Muslim feels a sense of caution. What is required of us now is to maintain this caution and mindfulness even after Ramadan. Every action should be done with the awareness of whether it is pleasing or displeasing to Allah, and whether it is permitted by Him. Before Ramadan, there might have been carelessness, a lack of concern for halal and haram, and permissible and impermissible. That attitude should now end, and the spirit of training received in Ramadan should continue. If Allah instills this awareness in our hearts, we will gain not only the benefits of Ramadan but also the mercy and blessings Allah has placed within this month, even after it has passed.
