Forgive What Was Said and Listened: Mufti Taqi Usmani’s Wise Advice on Seeking Forgiveness (Malfoozat of Shaykh al-Islam Hazrat Maulana Mufti Muhammad Taqi Usmani)
It was advised that the phrase, “Kaha suna maaf kar dena” (“forgive anything I may have said or listened”), is such a wise statement taught by our elders. We have heard our elders say this whenever people Separate after spending some time together. They would say, “Brother, please forgive anything I may have said or listened.” This is because when people stay together, whether in travel or at home, there is always a possibility of someone’s rights being overlooked in some way. So, before parting, one should ask for forgiveness for any such oversight.
If one does not seek forgiveness before parting and later realizes they wronged something, it may be too late, and they may not even get a chance to ask for forgiveness.
Who knows if they will meet again?
Therefore, this should be done at the time of parting. This phrase also inherently includes forgiveness for any backbiting that may have occurred, as it automatically seeks forgiveness for that as well.
